If you are unsure how to make your home look up-to-date, you may need to look no further than treating your exterior with a new coat of paint or stain. Siding can often be treated or painted easily enough, but if that isn’t enough to spruce up your home, painting shutters can make them look brand new and add a fun or trendy pop of color, or just reinvigorate a faded color that you once loved.  Your interior window treatments can often also be seen from the street, and are no less important to the overall look of your house. New paint or materials inside can be just the thing to accent a home and bring its decor up to speed.

If you are leaning toward a nice paint job for your shutters, you will need to consider a couple of things:

Are your shutters operable? At Colorado Shade and Shutter, we love our plantation shutters, which are indoors but can be seen from the street when closed.  Any other shutters that open and close will be exposed on both sides, and for obvious reasons it is wise to keep to the same color on the inside as on the outside.

If you are doing exterior non-operating shutters, you will need to pay careful attention to the weather rating of the paint. Indoor paint may match your house great, but it may not hold up to the beating of the sun, rain, and other weather that can fade and otherwise damage your layer of paint.

For your interior plantation shutters, it is important to know the material you are painting. Your local paint supplier can help you choose a paint that is compatible with your materials. Undoubtedly, one of your favorite things about your plantation shutters is their operable open-close function and the moving louvers. To maintain full functionality, it is important not to put too heavy a coat of paint on, especially if your shutters close to a fairly close fit already. Light colors on light colors are probably your best bet for avoiding the need for coat after coat of paint.

Be extra careful to keep your coat of paint away from moving parts: protecting the hinges is crucial to maintaining your louver functionality, and keeping your paint job from cracking or peeling while moving. A modern feeling home can be just a paint job away.  Just take care to do the job right and your house could feel just a little bit more elegant and exciting.
