So you’ve decided to have plantation shutters installed in your home. That’s a very stylish and elegant choice! Plantation shutters offer many benefits, including added privacy.  However, taking the right measurements is key to a successful shutter installation. If this is your first time, you may be confused about the process. Don’t worry this guide will shed the light on exactly what you need to do.

Why is the measuring process important?

Taking accurate measurements is the vital first step before any shutter installation. Without the right measurements, you have no way of knowing what your options are. Once you have the measurements, you can be more confident about getting your shutters. Plus, you’ll get that exciting feeling that comes with improving your home.

What do you need to get started?

In order to get started, you’re going to need a couple of items. You will need a steel measuring tape to do the actual measuring. You’ll need a pen and paper to record your measurement. Feel free to get in touch with Colorado Shade and Shutter if you feel lost at any point in the process.

How to go about the measuring process

You are going to measure your windows in several places. Don’t worry if the measurements are different at each point. This quite normal.

First, you’ll need to measure the width of your windows. To get this measurement, measure the top, center, and bottom of the inside of the window frame. For inside mounts, record the smallest measurement. If you’re going for an outside mount, you want to use the widest measurement. Either way, it needs to be accurate to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.

As your next step, you’ll need to find out the height of your window. Measure the left,  center, and right of the inside of your window frame. For inside mounts, write down the smallest height within 1/8th of an inch. For outside mounts, record the greatest height ( rounded to the nearest 1/8th of an inch).

You’ll also need to check the depth of your window.  This is crucial – your window’s depth will help you determine the size of your louvers. Also, make note of any latches or locks that may obstruct the shutters.

If you are not sure of your measurements, or simply don’t want to do it, that’s alright. After all, it might just be best to bring the experts in.
